Carol had met Edward and Merrill in the pub that day, and they had invited her to accompany them to a lake.

He tortured and beat Caswell by the lake. Edward teased her, implying that she might survive if she could swim across the pond.

Carol had been viciously abused before being forcibly held underwater until she stopped breathing at Willand Pond, a Dover lake.

Pehowic and Merrill disposed of her body across the state line in Maine.
