Wally Palmar (born Volodymyr Palamarchuk in Hamtramck, Michigan on April 27, 1954) is an American rock musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He is most known for being a founding member and often lead vocalist of the American new wave band The Romantics, which founded in 1977 in Detroit, Michigan. Palmar was born in 1954 in Hamtramck, Michigan, to Ukrainian parents, and grew up to the sounds of the British Invasion. Palmar and a group of high school classmates created The Romantics in 1977, and Nemperor Records signed them to their first album contract in 1979.
Palmar co-wrote the band’s first and greatest song, “What I Like About You,” which appeared on their self-titled first album for Nemperor in 1980 alongside British producer Pete Solley. Palmar sang lead vocals on the band’s 1983 album, In Heat, which included the band’s second major success, “Talking in Your Sleep.” Palmar also sang lead vocals on the follow-up song, “One in a Million,” which was a modest success. Palmar travelled with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band in 2010 and 2011, playing “What I Like About You” and “Talking in Your Sleep.” Palmar was one of the founding members of The Empty Hearts in 2014. Blondie drummer Clem Burke, The Chesterfield Kings bassist Andy Babiuk, The Cars guitarist Elliot Easton, and Small Faces and Faces pianist Ian McLagan were among Palmar’s bandmates on 429 Records. Ed Satsium produced the band’s self-titled first album, which was released on August 5, 2014.
