Karen and Richard Carpenter signed with A $ M Records on April 22, 1969, with the hope of expanding their music career. They released their first album called Offering which did not do very well on the music charts. Herp Albert the co-founder of A&M gave them a second chance despite talks from some of the label officials to release them. They recorded a song called “(They Long to Be) Close to You”.With the help of Karen’s vocals, the song topped at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 where it stayed for a month.
Richard saw a commercial for Crocker National Bank, sitting at home one night. He did recognize the voices of Paul Williams and Roger Nichols. the voices of Paul Williams and Roger Nichols were A&M songwriters on the commercial’s theme song “We’ve Only Just Begun.” He then called them to confirm if there was a full version of the song. William affirmed. He managed to turn the bank commercial jingle into an RIAA-certified Gold record

He used to play the Piano, Webs plays the tuba and bass while Karen played the drums.
